With reference to my despatch No.82 Commercial of the 17th of April last, I have the honour to inform Your Lordship that the Bill for increasing the subsidy to the North German Lloyd steamers to Australia and the Far East has not been made law.
It was found that there was so much opposition to the Bill from interests opposed to the Company's, that it was impossible to carry it through before the close of the Session.
The Bill has in consequence been dropped; but it is stated that in some form or other it will be re-introduced next year.
I have, &c.,
(Signed) Frank C. Lascelles.
